OXFORD – The Fix 26 Corridor Committee is reorganizing itself to expand its influence on behalf of the highway system in western Maine.

Al Bancroft, president of Bancroft Contracting, is chairing the new coalition, which will lobby not only on behalf of Route 26, but also all of the state highway arteries that connect with it, said Brett Doney, president of EnterpriseMaine.

“We started out nine years ago just focusing on Route 26,” and have been successful in securing funds for several major projects, he said.

The revamped committee will involve more of the towns living within the Route 26 corridor, he said. On Friday, the committee held a transportation summit at the Western Maine University and College Center.

Invited guests were David Cole, commissioner of the Maine Department of Transportation, and Dale Doughty, assistant director in MDOT’s Bureau of Planning.

“We’ve had a great working relationship with the department for many years,” Doney said.

The committee discussed several projects they would like to see funded in the near future, including a section of Route 26 in Poland, another section in Oxford, Route 117 from Norway Lake going toward Harrison, and pedestrian bridges over Pennesseewassee Stream in Norway.
