AUBURN – A veteran Auburn police lieutenant was arrested late Sunday, accused of harassing a woman he had been ordered to stay away from.
Tim Condon, 44, who resigned from the force on Friday, was arrested by Androscoggin County sheriff’s deputies on a charge of violating a protection order.
According to court documents, Condon had been involved in an intimate affair with a 39-year-old Auburn woman when the relationship turned sour.
After the woman obtained a court order to keep Condon away from her, the officer was placed on administrative leave at the department.
On Wednesday, Condon was served with a trespass warning, ordering him to stay away from the woman’s Auburn home.
On Thursday, Condon was asked to give up his access to guns as part of the protection order. A day later, the lieutenant resigned from the police force.
Auburn Deputy Police Chief Phil Crowell could not comment on the matter beyond confirming that Condon had resigned on Friday.
Late Sunday night, sheriff’s deputies received information Condon had contacted the 39-year-old woman who had sought the protection order. Investigators said Condon sent the woman a text message on her cellular phone, which qualifies as indirect contact. By law, a person who has been served a protection order is prohibited from even minimal contact, including phone calls, letters or e-mails.
Deputies went to Minot, where Condon lives, and arrested him. He was taken to the county jail about 11 p.m. and was bailed out roughly a half-hour later.
In a court document, the woman stated that she and Condon had recently ended an intimate relationship, but that he was still contacting her.
“Tim has continually harassed and threatened me,” the woman wrote in the court document. “I am afraid that Tim is dangerous and may come after me.”
She also described Condon as “seriously unstable” while requesting that he be warned to stay away from her. According to the court documents, Condon had been warned by his superior officers to stop harassing the woman.
In the court documents, the woman also accused Condon of tampering with a pending drunken driving case against her, although there was no further mention of that issue.
Condon joined the Auburn police force in March 1993. For two years, he was assigned to the Central Maine Violent Crime Task Force. When he returned to the police force in 2000, he was promoted to detective. He was promoted to sergeant later that year and then eventually to lieutenant.
Before he was arrested Sunday night, Condon was scheduled to appear in court Oct. 29 to discuss the merits of the protection order against him. It was unclear when he will make a court appearance on the charge of violating that order.
