Although the focus is on the national campaign, it is important that we do not lose sight of what is happening on our doorstep. “Representative Makas” is more than just a title that Elaine carries; it is an expression of her commitment to represent and to serve her constituents’ interests.
As legislation is hammered out, it is easy to lose sight of how laws actually impact people’s lives.
Elaine is a listener and is always aware of the “people factor.” When lesser clean-up standards for the Androscoggin River were being considered for the Lewiston-Auburn area, Elaine fought for the river and against legislation that would treat her constituents as second class citizens.
She is not a politician who is out there “doing her thing,” but is out there “doing our thing.” She is committed to giving people a voice and a choice.
