PARIS – Residents will have an opportunity to ask questions about the Palesky tax-cap initiative at a special forum Thursday, less than two weeks before the November ballot.

Carol Palesky, who originated the tax-cap proposal, will be present to talk and answer questions about the initiative. Geoff Herman of the Maine Municipal Association also will be on hand to represent the opposing view.

The forum will held at 6:30 p.m. at the Oxford Hills Comprehensive High School in Paris. Both Palesky and Herman will make opening statements and be given a chance to debate briefly before a question-and-answer session with the audience.

Don Mayberry, minister at the First Congregational Church of South Paris, will moderate.

The Palesky initiative, if approved by voters, would cap property taxes at $10 per $1,000 of assessed property valuation, based on values in 1996-97.

Lawmakers have said the rollback to past property valuations may be illegal.
