WISCASSET — Chris Gosselin netted the winning goal on a corner kick by Joshua Hixon to give St. Dom’s a hard-fought 3-2 victory over Wiscasset in boys’ playoff soccer action Tuesday.
TJ Ustach contributed two goals for the Saints, who were ranked 11th coming into the game. Goalkeeper Ryan Gilbert made nine saves to help secure the win.
The Redskins received goals from Greg Zelger and Seth Hartman to tie the game in the second half. Wiscasset goalkeeper Zach Hartman held St. Dom’s scoreless through two overtimes while notching nine saves.
Oxford Hills 3, Mt. Blue 2
FARMINGTON – Long after regulation had run out and three exhausting overtimes had proved fruitless, Craig Laplante drove home the winning goal with less than two minutes remaining in the fourth overtime to lift Oxford Hills to a triumphant 3-2 victory over Mt. Blue in a first-round boys’ KVAC playoff soccer game.
Willy Libby and Jesse Strouse each scored an early goal to give the Vikings a 2-1 lead heading into the second half. Oxford Hills goalkeeper Dave Laroche recorded 16 saves on 22 shots in the marathon game.
Greg Allen scored a first-half goal on a penalty kick for the Cougars to make it 2-1. With two minutes left in regulation, Zack Frechette tied the game with a dramatic goal to force overtime play.
Field hockey
Lisbon 4, Freeport 1
FREEPORT – Kelly Campbell netted a pair of goals to lead Lisbon to a 4-1 victory over Freeport in an MVC field hockey preliminary Tuesday.
Erica Merritt and Emily Poloquin also tallied for the Greyhounds to complete the scoring. This was Lisbon’s first playoff win in 20 years. Beth Williams needed only three saves in net to notch the win.
Amy Curtis scored Freeport’s lone goal in the first half. Becca Powers handled netminding duties, turning away eight shots..
Messalonskee 2, EL 0
OAKLAND – Melissa Oliver and Lauren Sutti both tallied goals to propel Messalonskee to a 2-0 win over Edward Little in a KVAC preliminary round playoff contest Tuesday afternoon.
The Eagles (9-5-1) put both points on the board early and were never challenged. Beth Ridley made five saves in net to notch the shutout. Mary Martin and Katie Ouellette handled netkeeping duties for the Eddies (9-6), turning away 11 shots on the day.
