DIXFIELD – At Monday night’s meeting, selectmen gave Town Clerk Vickie Carrier the nod to keep the town office open beyond 4 p.m. on two days next week.
Carrier said that according to Maine election law, towns with populations of more than 2,500 people must keep their registrar of voters offices open a week before elections for three days between 5 and 9 p.m.
“In the past, we’ve done two days, and I can remember only getting one person – not to register to vote, but to register her car,” Carrier said.
Dixfield’s town office, which is open Monday through Friday, closes at 4 p.m.
Carrier recommended keeping the town office open until 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 26, and Thursday, Oct. 28, to register voters.
Selectmen acquiesced with a 4-0 vote.
In other business, selectmen voted 4-0 to dedicate the town report to resident Pat McBride for her many years of service to Dixfield.
Later, Town Manager Nanci Allard read to the board a letter from McBride stating that due to health reasons she was resigning Monday from the Planning Board, the Comprehensive Plan Committee and the Ludden Memorial Library Board of Trustees.
Selectmen then asked Allard to advertise for people to fill the positions. But after Allard suggested that the board appoint alternate Planning Board member Norman Mitchell to fill McBride’s seat, selectmen did that, with a 4-0 vote.
They then asked Allard to advertise for people to fill the planner’s alternate slot and the other two seats.
The board also decided to continue maintaining Morrison Road after Allard’s research failed to determine who owns the road: the county, state or the town.
And, the board has no intention of closing Valley Road on Severy Hill. Initially, Allard said to two Valley Road residents present Monday night, officials were examining their options when an estimate to fix the bank on the brook side of the road came in at $80,000.
But Chairman Eugene Skibitsky calmed their fears.
He said, “This board has no intention of closing the road. The town is going to continue to maintain it until we hear something different. That’s our plan of action.”
