FARMINGTON – The Friends of Ike will hold the Do-I-run Run/Hike for Ike 5-kilometer race on Sunday.
The race will benefit Isaac Doiron and his family. Isaac, 9 years old, an avid Red Sox fan, was diagnosed with aplastic anemia in July, after his mother noticed some bruises. At the end of August, Isaac received a bone marrow transplant from his 6-year-old sister Erin. Isaac has remained in Boston since the transplant, and while recovery could take up to three months, there has been talk of an earlier homecoming.
The run and raffle will help pay for the transplant and other expenses of his treatment. Already more than $5,000 has been raised.
Aplastic anemia is a rare disorder caused by the failure of bone marrow to produce enough blood cells. Blood cells must be continuously reproduced. When cell production in the bone marrow fails, levels of blood cells drop. When the blood cells reach dangerously low levels, symptoms of anemia, bleeding, and infection can occur.
Sunday’s race is open to runners and walkers and will start at 9 a.m. at the Rail Trail in East Wilton, next to Your Hometown Market. It is a point-to-point race that will end at the Titcomb Mountain Ski Lodge.
There will be prizes for the top three men and women in each age group, as well as a raffle featuring prizes from area businesses and a grand prize of a weekend at the Balsams Resort in New Hampshire. There will also be a kids’ one-mile run at 10:30, after the 5-kilometer race is completed. The children’s race will begin at the ski lodge.
Entry fees for the 5K are $10 for those who preregister and $12 on the day of the race. Fees for the kids’ run are $5 with preregistration and $8 on Sunday.
To preregister, people may call Bob Bachorik at 778-2091 or fill out an entry form at Northern Lights in Farmington. Raffle tickets are available at Northern Lights. More information may be obtained by calling Bob or Candy Bachorik at 778-2091.
