PARIS – A decision on whether to close the Brown Street Transfer Station an additional day each week is pending.

Members of Norway-Paris Solid Waste Corp.’s board of directors decided Wednesday they will vote on the matter at their next regular meeting, Nov. 17.

“I think the transfer station, the day to close would be Thursday,” Chairman Eric Grondahl said. “It’s my personal opinion. I’ve been thinking about it for months. Close Thursdays.”

“I could live with that,” said board member Ray Garnett.

The transfer station is normally closed on Monday. However, because of budget and related staff shortages, the board has considered closing it an extra day. At a public hearing Sept. 15, commercial waste hauler Archie Garneau said it would be difficult to have the station closed another business day.

Paris resident Bob Ripley responded that the only day he can make it to the transfer station is Sunday. Taxpayers should be able to use the station they pay for, he said.

General Manager Alison McCrady on Wednesday suggested the board take advantage of winter hours at the Frost Hill Landfill, which will go into effect Dec. 1. In the winter, the landfill is closed on Sundays in addition to Mondays and Wednesdays.

“If we closed Frost Hill on Sundays, then the two persons scheduled for Frost Hill could work at the transfer station those days,” she said.

Grondahl liked McCrady’s suggestion, but felt the transfer station should be closed two days even with the additional help. Thursdays are slow, he said, before suggesting that McCrady contact local waste haulers to “tell them what we’re thinking about.”

Board member Joe Bracy said McCrady should notify the haulers by mail. “We’ve already had a public hearing and most of those guys weren’t here,” he pointed out.

If the extra day of closure is approved, the board decided, it would start Dec. 1. That’s when the Frost Hill Landfill hours change.

“I’m sure we’re going to get feedback, but that’s life,” Garnett said.

In other business, Grondahl distributed a rough draft of a request for proposals that would be posted to attract private companies interested in taking over operations at the transfer station.

He said he will send the notice to the Norway and Paris boards of selectmen for comments after getting feedback from other board members.
