Today, is National Make a Difference Day, and I am reminded of the scripture verse that says, “It is more blessed to give than to receive.”

This is an excellent opportunity for individuals and groups in our community to perform their God-given talent at no charge to others. In my opinion, not just to those who are unfortunate, but to all those who are around us on a daily basis.

Some may feel that they are excluded from this day of national volunteerism because they have no apparent talent, such as singing, dancing, musical or acting ability.

Others may feel limited by finances and are not able to give monetarily to nonprofit charities. I would remind them that something as simple as a friendly smile, gentle pat on the back, a firm handshake, a few kind words or the sending of a “thinking of you” note can make all the difference in the world to the outcome of someone’s day.

These are activities that everyone, regardless of age, ability or social status, can take part in. This would also be an appropriate time to grant forgiveness to those who have trespassed against us. If everyone goes out of their way to perform some act of kindness, I’m sure the world will be a better place to live in on Sunday.
