BREWER – The two top teams in Eastern Class B collided at Doyle Field in Brewer Friday night and the Witches remained undefeated with a hard fought 13-0 victory over Leavitt.

“These are the two best defenses in the conference,” said Brewer coach Ed Ortego, “maybe even the state.”

Neither team was able to crack into the end zone in the first half.

Brewer had the best chance of the half, driving from its own 22-yard line to Leavitt’s 25 late in the first quarter.

But the he Hornet’s defense stiffened, throwing Brewer QB Ricky Porter for a 9-yard loss on third down and forcing the Witches to punt.

The Hornets managed to drive late in the second quarter.

Two long Matt Cote passes got Leavitt to the Brewer 21 before one last ditch pass was intercepted in the end zone to end the half.

After holding the Hornets on the opening possesion of the second half, Brewer took over at its own 41. Eight plays later, Porter took it in from 6 yards out.

Porter clinched the victory with an 8-yard run with 7:55 to go to.

“I thought we played harder in the second half,” said Ortego, “We didn’t make any changes,we just played harder.

“Their punting and kicking game made us play a long field, said Leavitt coach Mike Hathaway. “They have fast kids and play basic football.”
