LEWISTON – Travis Mealy, Mathieu Aubin, Alexandre Picard, Marc-Andre Cliche and Eric Castonguay sparked a second-period outburst Friday as the Lewiston Maineiacs skated away to a 10-2 victory over the Rimouski Oceanic at the Colisee.

Lewiston put the game away with seven goals in the middle frame.

A crowd of 3,188 saw the Maineiacs win their sixth consecutive game at home to start the season, and their sixth consecutive game overall without a loss (5-0-1).

“The boys have to be proud of that,” said Maineiacs coach Clem Jodoin. “This was one of those nights where everything bounced the right way, but now we have to be ready for (tonight).”

Lewiston held 17-year-old Rimouski phenom Sidney Crosby scoreless, the first time a team has done that this season.

But it was the Rimouski defense on which the Maineiacs keyed all night, burning the struggling blueliners for several odd-man rushes. The Maineiacs also chased starting netminder Cedrick Desjardins from the net with five minutes to play in the second period, and scored six times on eight chances with a man advantage.

“Aubin, Alex Bourret and me, we play well together,” said Picard, who scored four goals Friday. “On the power play the chances were there and we scored on them. When things go well for us, they really go well.”

Mealy started the Maineiacs’ deluge at 3:54 of the second on a wrist shot from the left point that skipped past Desjardins low to the glove side. Aubin followed with a nice finish on a tic-tac-toe pass play from Alex Bourret, and Picard made it 3-1 at the 10-minute mark on a tip in front with the Maineiacs on the power play.

Cliche added a goal at 12:19, Aubin notched another at 12:47 and Castonguay potted his fourth of the year at 14:13 to drive Desjardins out of the net.

“We had a lot of chances on them tonight,” said Castonguay. “I am glad to be able to score on some of those.”

Picard slid his second past rookie backup goalie Scott Fraser with three minutes to play in the period to put the Maineiacs ahead 7-1.

Erick Tremblay made it 7-2 with 1:44 left in the second period on an awkward shot from the left side that fluttered in off the arm of Lewiston netminder Jaroslav Halak (23 saves).

In the third, Picard tallied his third and fourth goals of the game and Castonguay added his second to cap the scoring. The Maineiacs held tough on the blue line, weathering an early flurry in front of Halak.

Early in the first period, the Maineiacs figured the best way to keep Crosby and the rest of the Oceanic off the scoreboard was to eliminate their ability to shoot. Through the first 12 minutes, Lewiston outshot Rimouski 12-1, but had nothing to show for it on the scoreboard.

“We didn’t do anything different,” said Jodoin. “We went out and played our game, that was it. Nothing special at all.”

The Oceanic made the Maineiacs pay for their futility at 14:22 of the first when Francis Charette eluded Jonathan Paiement on a rush up the left side and broke in on Halak. Even with Paiement hooking him in the midsection, Charette managed a nifty move to the backhand and tucked the puck underneath Halak for the goal.

On the other end, Desjardins made three or four solid saves to deny a host of Maineiacs, including Cliche, who was playing in his first game back from an injury.

The two teams will again tangle again at the Colisee tonight at 7 p.m.
