TOPSHAM – Lewiston coach Mike McGraw has patrolled the sidelines for 22 years, but Friday was the first time he has coached a game decided by penalty corners.

In a stirring and exhausting contest that went scoreless for 80 minutes in regulation and 40 more minutes in overtime, No. 3 Mt. Ararat converted on four of five penalty kicks to edge the No. 6 Blue Devils 1-0.

Dave Patry, Dave Labonte and Mohamed Mohamed converted on Lewiston’s five penalty-kick attempts.

“You can’t ask for a better game,” said McGraw. “It had everything.”

Both teams had numerous scoring opportunities, but goalies Brian Mason for Lewiston and Mt. Ararat’s Ryan Vermette kept the ball out of net. Lewiston defender’s Nick Bonenfant, Tony Travaglini, Matt Cyr, Alain Prevost and Jake Theriault aided Mason by deflecting the Eagles attack. Mason finished with 19 saves.

The Blue Devils’ best opportunity came late in regulation, but Vermette happened to be standing in the right place and the point-blank blast struck his chest.

Isaiah Eagles, Gregg Gibbs, Matt Hauser, Nate Holden and Eric Nash each added a goal.

Matt Chaission turned back eight shots to register the shutout while Kent Madeisa made four saves for Rangeley.

Mt. Abram 2, Monmouth 0

SALEM – Aaron Adams tabulated an unassisted goal in the first half for the eventual game-winner as Mt. Abram secured a 2-0 win over Monmouth in quarterfinal boys’ soccer action Friday.

Sam Witherspoon converted a pass from Christian Talmage at the 23:30 mark of the second half to add a little cushion for the Roadrunners down the stretch.

In frigid conditions and spitting snow, the Roadrunners were able to keep the Mustangs on the defensive most of the game. Monmouth goalie Kyle Pelletier had 15 saves, while Andy Sperry recorded the win with three saves for Mt. Abram.
