The final Pine Tree Conference Crabtree standings didn’t completely settle this year’s playoff seedings, so league officials had to use the next best thing – some change.
Gardiner, Windham, Mt. Blue and Brunswick earned the top four seeds and first-round home games. Bangor, Messalonskee, Skowhegan and Oxford Hills secured the final four spots.
Gardiner (7-1) is the top seed. Windham and Mt. Blue tied for second, finishing at 7-1 with an index of 125.00.
The tie-breaker came down to a coin toss, which Windham won to earn the No. 2 seed and a first-round matchup with 3-5 Skowhegan. Mt. Blue will host No. 6 Messalonskee (6-2), whom the Cougars beat 27-0 earlier this year.
Oxford Hills earned the eighth and final seed and draws Gardiner, which beat the Vikings by the narrowest of margins last week, 21-20.
“The last three weeks, we’ve played three real quality opponents and I think that’s great experience for us,” said Oxford Hills coach Paul Bickford. whose team lost on a missed extra point with 44 seconds left.
“It was a darn close game. For us, we need to keep improving and take the next step. The big thing for us is getting in.”
Defending PTC champion Brunswick (6-2) will host Bangor (7-1) in a rematch of last year’s conference title game.
Mt. Blue coach Gary Parlin said having a 7-1 team go on the road for the first round of the playoffs is and indication of the conference’s balance.
“I think the eight teams in the playoffs is a dead-even heat,” Parlin said. “How would you like to be a No. 1 or 2 seed and play Skowhegan?”
