HAMPDEN – The Lewiston girls’ soccer team came home Wednesday night looking pretty blue.
Well, one of them did anyway.
After a convincing 3-0 victory over Hampden, the Blue Devils celebrated the milestone victory by spray-painting the dome of their coach blue.
“They brought (the paint) along and said Coach, we’re going to do something if we win, is that alright?'” said a freshly painted Rick Meyers. “I said Whatever, as long as you win.’ They can’t shave my hair off anyway.”
There was little doubt about Lewiston’s victory. The Blue Devils (13-3) controlled much of the Eastern A semifinal, lifting Lewiston to its first regional championship game. They play at Brunswick on Saturday.
“We’re the last team standing at school,” said Kelsey Rodrigue. “There’s no more sports going on right now. So we knew we had to win.”
The victory also produced the 10th shutout of the season for goalie Alison Coleman, breaking the mark that Beth Melanson had set last year when Lewiston reached the semifinal round for the first time.
“At the beginning of the season, it seemed out of reach, but we pulled together as a team,” said Coleman. “It’s just as much their record as it is my record. I couldn’t have done it without them.”
Lewiston’s defense kept the Broncos’ (11-4-1) quiet. Coleman made a key save on Annaliese Lafayette early, but the defense cleared away most threats after that. Luca Jacobsen, Megan Paradis, Lea Chouinard and Katie Nadeau fueled the transition game that had Hampden chasing Lewiston up front.
“They did awesome,” said Coleman. “They can’t score if they can’t shoot, and my defense did a great job with that.”
Kelsey Varney helped set up the first two goals, while Laura Martel had a goal and an assist. Kaitlynn Pike also scored a goal.
The 1-0 lead came with 13:56 left in the first half. Varney won the ball in the midfield and fed Martel up front. She touched it past a defender and was in alone on keeper Rebecca Workman.
“I just put a move on,” said Martel. “I didn’t know if she would go for it. You’ve got to try things when you’re that close to the net. I knew I didn’t have a shot or time to turn and shoot. The goalie came out, and I had a great angle. I just had to decide which corner I was going to put it in, and that near corner looked pretty good.”
With Martel on the sidelines, Lewiston made it 2-0 with 8:45 left. Varney sent a pass to the left corner for Rodrigue, who lofted it over the reach of Workman.
“I just saw Kelsey pass it and saw a perfect opportunity to volley it in,” said Rodrigue. “I didn’t think it was going in because it looked like it was going over.”
Martel set up the final goal with 26:13 left in the game. She centered a pass for Pike in front.
“We were playing to get to the finals,” said Martel. “That’s what our team was playing for. We weren’t playing for a school record. Yes, that’s cool if we break them, but it’s the game of soccer that keeps us going and the love of the game for our team.”
