Dear Sun Spots: We are hoping your readers will be able to help us find a few people who would be willing to become a McGruff Safe House.

The program helps to keep children safe on their way to and from school. We presently have 10 safe houses, but we are looking for more. We are looking for a few residents who live near bus stops or who are on the walking route for children going to and from school. There are only two requirements for becoming a safe house. The first is a person needs to be able to pass a background check and the other is the person, or a family member, needs to be home when the children are going to and from school.

If any of your readers are interested in becoming a safe house they can contact officer Alice French at (207) 784-6422, ext. 335, and she will give them an application. We hope to hear from your readers soon. Thank you. – McGruff Safe House Committee, Lewiston.

Dear Sun Spots: Congratulations on the diversity of this column. There is always something interesting. Thanks to your help, I have sold several copies of the book “There Was a Land.” The book was published by the Flagstaff Memorial Chapel Association in 1999 for the 50th anniversary of the creation of Flagstaff Lake. (Dead River Valley and Flagstaff Village were destroyed by the 28-mile-long lake, but many memories are brought to life in this book).

Some of those books do not have an index. I shall mail one to anyone who contacts me. In addition, the books I have on hand now are complete. The price remains the same, $35 plus $2 for shipping and handling. I can be reached at (207) 645-2732. – Eleanor Currier, North Jay.

Dear Sun Spots: My daughter is an avid reader and has been enjoying The Baby-Sitters Club series by Ann M. Martin. However, we are having trouble finding books in the series. We are currently looking for books 12 through 24. We can be reached at (207) 782-4916. – Steven and Chris Samson, Auburn.

Answer: In addition to responses from readers, Sun Spots would encourage you to contact Pepperell Books at (207) 344-6900; The Page Turner and Pages Already Turned, 247 Lisbon St., Lewiston, (207) 753-1112, and Artios Books at 180 Turner St., Auburn, (207) 786-4007. You might also like to check out www.booksalefinder.com, which lists book sales being held around the United States.

Sun Spots also has an daughter who’s an avid reader and is difficult to keep in books. At Pepperell’s, you can have your daughter take in the books she’s finished. You get one free book for every three you take in. So it works out well, especially if your daughter devours books the way ours does! Sun Spots wishes you the best of luck in your search.

In the meantime, you may also want to contact both the Auburn and Lewiston public libraries, which have books for sale, typically discarded ones or ones customers leave for purchase at the front of the library. You may also want to check with other libraries in your area as well. In Sun Spots’ experience, they also offer books for sale, however some have a better variety than others. Sun Spots checks these stacks frequently!
