The Roxbury and Dixfield fire departments are the latest recipients of grants provided by the federal Department of Homeland Security’s Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program.

Roxbury will get a new firetruck thanks to a grant of $154,800. Delia Knapp, town clerk, along with Assistant Fire Chief Wayne Hamel, and Byron residents Rosie White and Bob Susbury worked on the grant application last spring.

“We’re extremely happy about it. This is the first time we applied and we were accepted,” said Knapp. “It’s a good feeling.”

She said both Roxbury and neighboring Byron will benefit from the new truck, which will replace a 1974 pumper.

The town must raise about $17,000 as a match for the grant.

Roxbury selectmen will discuss the grant, and whether a special town meeting will be called to raise the matching amount, at their meeting Nov. 8. If a special town meeting is not required, then the appropriation will be on the annual March town meeting warrant.

The Dixfield Fire Co. received $28,800 to buy an air compressor for self-contained breathing apparatus. The town must provide about $2,800 toward the equipment purchase.

Scott Dennett, deputy fire chief, said he and Chief Scott Blaisdell have been trying for four years to acquire the equipment.

“We’re very pleased,” he said.

The new air compressor and associated equipment will replace similar apparatus that have been on loan to the Dixfield Fire Co. from Maine Fire Training and Education.
