“Ordered: That all regular police officers of the city of Lewiston be required, when on duty, when an overcoat is needed, to wear regulation police overcoats of heavy blue beaver, shade subject to approval of this committee, same to be doubled breasted frock overcoat, two outside pockets with flaps, two rows of gilt buttons on front, eight in each row, six on back of skirt of coat in rows each, three small ones on each sleeve, Prussian collar to button up close to neck. These coats are to be secured on or before Dec. 1, 1904, and worn from that date, from which time they are adopted as the uniform overcoat of the police force and are to continue as such until otherwise ordered.”

50 Years Ago, 1954

Dedication ceremonies marking the completion of renovations at the A. H. Benoit & Co. clothing store at Ash and Lisbon streets, Lewiston, will be held at 1 p.m. Monday with city officials and personnel of the firm taking part. The brief dedication will consist of a tape-cutting by Mayor Ernest Malenfant of Lewiston and remarks by Lewiston Industrial president of the clothing firm. Work on the front and inside of the store began last June.

25 Years Ago, 1979

The management of the Twin Cinemas at the Lewiston Promenade Mall, under fire from city officials and religious leaders for its planned showing of the film “The Life of Brian,” has extended invitations to city officials, religious leaders, the area press and all individuals picketing the film to a free showing of the movie at 3 p.m., Friday. The scheduled Friday evening opening of the film has already incited picketing by various religious organizations and individuals the last two evenings. Monday night Lewiston aldermen added to the protest by approving a motion to send an official statement denouncing the film to the theater’s management.
