The Sun Journal’s endorsement of George W. Bush for president contains factual inaccuracies and faulty logic. The editorial defines the two top problems as “the deficit-hindered economy and Iraq.” The president, who inherited a budget surplus, bears direct responsibility for the creation of both problems. The deficit is the direct result of a tax policy that grants huge cuts to those least in need.

Under the Bush administration, there has been an increasing concentration of wealth in the hands of a few, to the detriment of the poor and the middle class. This is not a healthy trend for democracy.

Secondly, the war in Iraq was the result of Bush’s bad decision based on faulty intelligence about weapons of mass destruction that have never been found and a confusion of Baathist, secular Saddam Hussein with al-Qaida and Osama bin Laden. While Cheney continues to assert a relationship, most agree that no clear link existed before the war.

Thus, George Bush is responsible for creating both the deficit and the war in Iraq, a misguided response to the terrorist attack.

For that incompetence, the Sun Journal wants to reward him with four more years as president of the United States?
