I am writing to voice my concern about the Heritage Initiative.
I have heard some people say that they do not care about the Heritage Initiative. They think it’s a good idea, or that it will not impact them. I am writing to let the people know that this initiative will impact more people than they realize. When all is said and done, 850 people will be removed from their homes. The number of available apartments will decrease and the price of rents will continue to rise. This will affect all the rents in Lewiston, not just the ones in the downtown.
The plan says that the crime rate should decrease in the downtown. I am sure it will, but at the same time the crime rate in other parts of the city will likely increase. So just keep on believing what the city wants you to believe, that this will not impact you in a negative way.
For those of you who are lucky enough not to have to pay rent, just remember that for every building that is removed, the tax base will shrink, because roads are not taxable.
I hope people will think about the true impact of the Heritage Initiative. I also hope that they will come out and support the people who will be impacted the most.
