LEWISTON – Terrrence O’Connell scored his team leading 10th goal of the season to give Bates a 1-0 win over Colby in NESCAC men’s soccer action Saturday afternoon.
O’Connell scored the Bobcat’s (10-3-1) lone goal off an assist from Ithai Schori less than three minutes into the second half. Bates had a 10-5 shot advantage over the Mules (5-7-1).
James Kenly made two saves for Bates to record his second shutout of the season, while Josh Kahane made five saves for Colby in the loss.
Bates tied the school record for wins, while earning the No. 5 seed in the NESCAC Championship.
Green Mountain 3, St. Joseph’s 0
JERSEY CITY, NJ – Chris Nevitt scored twice in the first half to propell Green Mountain College to a 3-0 win over St. Joseph’s College, in semifinal soccer action in Division III Independent Men’s Soccer Northeast Regional Championships Saturday afternoon.
Nevitt opened the scoring just 7:22 into the first half for the only goal the Eagles would need to advance to the final round. Sean Burns sealed the victory with a second half goal to account for the final score.
The Monks will play Sunday against Mitchell College ina consolation game at 11 a.m.
Eastern Connecticut 1, Southern Maine 0
WILLIMANTIC, Conn. – Junior forward Carl Segura scored the lone goal on his only shot 74 seconds into sudden death overtime to lift the Eastern Connecticut State University to a 1-0 win over the University of Southern Maine in men’s soccer action Saturday.
Segura received a pass from Warriors’ (6-10-3) junior midfielder Kevin Marshall deep on the right wing, carried it into the box and unloaded a hard line drive across the goal. Huskies’ (10-4-3) sophomore keeper Chris Willard dove to his right to put his hands on the ball, but could not slow the momentum enough to keep it from carrying over the goal line.

Bates, Colby tie (1-1)
LEWISTON – Jessie Gargiulo scored with just 4:10 remaining in regulation as Bates battled to a 1-1 tie with Colby in the final game of the NESCAC women’s soccer schedule for both teams Saturday afternoon.
Gargiulo scored her team high eighth goal of the season for the Bobcats (9-3-2) off an assist from Kim Alexander to tie the score.
Libba Cox scored off an assist from Liz Morbec to provide the Mules (7-5-2) with a 1-0 lead at the 70:49 mark.
Bates held a 21-10 shot advantage, but Colby’s Elizabeth Riley made 11 saves in goal, while Emily Howieson made five stops for the Bobcats.
Stony Brook 1, UMaine 0
STONY BROOK, N.Y. – Victoria Feliciano converted a feed from Kelly Bahnsen at the corner at the 14 minute mark to lift Stony Brook to a 1-0 win over the University of Maine in America East soccer action Saturday afternoon.
The Black Bears came out strong in the second half holding a 9-1 edge in shots but could not solve the goal tending of Cindy Bennett who turned in a shutout in net for the win.
Eastern Connecticut State 3, Southern Maine 1
GORHAM – Eastern Connecticut State College scored three times in a span of 3:22 to erase a 1-0 deficit and hand the University of Southern Maine a 3-1 setback in Little East Conference soccer play Saturday afternoon.
The Huskies took the initial lead as Amanda Valeriani drilled the ball into the back of the net converting a pass from Liz Burton at 35:57 of the first half but it was all they would be able to get past the Warriors keeper Allison Sumecki (5 saves).
The Warriors goals were scored by Kassiani Bisbikos, Megan Taylor and Jen Ferrari.
Field hockey
Colby 4, Bates 1
LEWISTON – Four different players scored goals to lead Colby to a 4-1 win over Bates in field hockey action Saturday.
Adrienne LeClair gave the Mules (8-6) a 1-0 lead less than 10 minutes into the game, and Lauren Smith improved the lead to 2-0 at the half.
Erin Chandler scored with less than 20 minutes to play to cut the lead to one for the Bobcats (3-11), but Christine Maloney and Jennifer Reilly scored insurance goals for Colby down the stretch.
Sarah Sprague made 14 saves in goal for Bates, while Jamie Enos stopped seven shots for Colby in the win.
Southern Maine 3, Bridgewater 2
GORHAM – Erika Kroom scored the game winning goal at 58:21 to propell the University of Southern Maine to a 3-2 win over Bridgewater State College in Little East Conference field hockey action Saturday afternoon.
Laura Pratt put the huskies on the board just 52 seconds into the game while Rachel Nimon added a second goal setting the stage for Kroom’s game-winner.a
