COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Florida State’s dominance of Maryland ended with a highly improbable upset.
Joel Statham threw for 333 yards and ran for a score, and the Terrapins held on to beat the fifth-ranked Seminoles 20-17 Saturday.
Florida State (6-2, 4-2 Atlantic Coast Conference) came in with a six-game winning streak and a perfect 14-0 record against Maryland (4-4, 2-3), which had scored a total of 17 points in losing three straight conference games.
But the Seminoles fell behind 20-10 before turning to former starting quarterback Chris Rix at the start of the fourth quarter. On his second series, Rix moved FSU to the 35 before a 52-yard field goal try by Xavier Beitia hit the left crossbar.
No. 1 USC 42, Washington State 12
PULLMAN, Wash. – Reggie Bush and LenDale White each scored two touchdowns, Dwayne Jarrett caught two more from scores from Matt Leinart and No. 1 Southern California routed Washington State 42-12 Saturday.
In rolling up 426 yards of offense, USC (8-0, 5-0 Pac-10) extended its winning streak to 17 games and 12 straight in the Pac-10 Conference.
The Trojans defense held the Cougars to 156 yards, sacking quarterback Alex Brink five times, forcing seven fumbles and limiting the Cougars to minus-9 yards rushing.
No. 2 Oklahoma 38, No. 20 Oklahoma St. 35
STILLWATER, Okla. – Oklahoma barely escaped another season-spoiling upset by Oklahoma State.
Adrian Peterson rushed for 249 yards and Cowboys kicker Jason Ricks missed a 49-yard field goal with 11 seconds left, giving the second-ranked Sooners a 38-35 victory over their pesky rivals on Saturday.
Mark Bradley caught a career-high three TD passes for Oklahoma (8-0, 5-0, Big 12), which has won two straight over the Cowboys since losing two costly games in the Bedlam series in 2001 and 2002.
No. 3 Auburn 35, Mississippi 14
OXFORD, Miss. – Jason Campbell rushed for two touchdowns and threw for another, and No. 3 Auburn clinched a spot in the Southeastern Conference championship game with a 35-14 win over Mississippi on Saturday night.
Campbell, the league’s most efficient quarterback, was 11-of-22 for 234 yards and had two 1-yard touchdown runs for the Tigers (9-0, 6-0), who scored 28 points after halftime to lock up the Western Division title before their first off week of the season.
The Tigers have won or shared four of the past five division crowns, but are 0-2 in league championship games since the SEC split into divisions in 1992. Some Auburn players celebrated their latest achievement by leaping into the orange-clad section of the crowd – a la the Lambeau Leap – and dancing as flashbulbs popped in the stands.
North Carolina 31, No. 4 Miami 28
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – North Carolina might have kicked Miami right out of the national title race.
Connor Barth booted a 42-yard field goal on the final play of the game, giving North Carolina a shocking 31-28 upset of the fourth-ranked Hurricanes on Saturday night.
When Miami called a timeout just before the kick, fans began lining the hedges just outside the sidelines in preparation for the celebration. The ball flew just inside the left upright, and soon the field was covered with people, celebrating North Carolina’s first win over a top five opponent. Both goal posts went down within minutes of Barth’s field goal.
No. 8 Texas 31, Colorado 7
BOULDER, Colo. – Vince Young got a couple bad throws out of his system early and No. 8 Texas rolled from there, getting 141 yards rushing from Cedric Benson in a 31-7 victory over Colorado on Saturday.
Benson and Young each ran for a pair of touchdowns, linebacker Aaron Harris and safety Michael Griffin combined on a pair of turnovers and the Longhorns stayed in the running for a BCS bowl by winning their third straight since lossing to Oklahoma.
The Texas passing game has been suspect all year and Young showed why early. On Texas’ seventh play, he telegraphed a pass to the corner that Terrence Wheatley intercepted and returned 37 yards to put Colorado (4-4, 1-4 Big 12) ahead 7-0.
No. 10 Georgia 31, Florida 24
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – David Greene’s record-tying touchdown pass came when Georgia needed it most.
Greene threw three touchdowns, including a big one in the fourth quarter, and the 10th-ranked Bulldogs snapped a six-game losing streak against rival Florida with a 31-24 victory Saturday.
Greene tied Eric Zeier’s school record with 67 touchdown passes and matched Peyton Manning for the most victories (39) by a starting quarterback in NCAA Division I-A history.
More importantly, Greene ended years of frustration for the Bulldogs at the World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party. Georgia had lost 13 of the last 14 in the series.
No. 11 Tennessee 43, South Carolina 29
COLUMBIA, S.C. – Erik Ainge threw three touchdown passes as No. 11 Tennessee overcame early offensive problems to win its 12th straight over South Carolina, 43-29, on Saturday.
Cedric Houston added a career-high 190 yards rushing and a TD as the Vols (7-1, 5-1 SEC) rolled past the Gamecocks (5-3, 3-3), who were thought to be Tennessee’s last real roadblock to the Southeastern Conference title game. The Vols have beaten Georgia and only must get past league doormats Kentucky and Vanderbilt next month to get to the Georgia Dome on Dec. 4.
No. 12 Michigan 45, Michigan State 37
ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Two for the comeback. One for the win.
Braylon Edwards caught two touchdown passes to help Michigan erase a 17-point, fourth-quarter deficit in just 5:44 and grabbed a third TD in triple overtime to lift the Wolverines to a 45-37 win over Michigan State on Saturday.
After the Spartans gained just 2 yards on their final possession, the game ended with an incomplete pass to the end zone.
No. 12 Michigan (8-1, 6-0 Big Ten) moved a half-game ahead of idle Wisconsin in the conference and kept its hopes alive for a Bowl Championship Series bid.
Northwestern 13, No. 17 Purdue 10
EVANSTON, Ill. – Noah Herron ran 3 yards for a touchdown with 38 seconds left to lift Northwestern to a 13-10 upset of No. 17 Purdue on Saturday, its second victory over a top 25 team this year.
Purdue had a final chance, but Taylor Stubblefield couldn’t hold on to a 40-yard pass into the end zone as time expired. The pass came from backup quarterback Brandon Kirsch, who replaced one-time Heisman Trophy favorite Kyle Orton at the end of the third quarter.
When the ball was knocked out of Stubblefield’s hands, the homecoming crowd roared and Northwestern coach Randy Walker – on the sidelines after spending two days in the hospital this week with a heart ailment – grinned.
No. 15 West Virginia 35, Rutgers 30
PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Chris Henry caught a 39-yard scoring pass and set up another touchdown with a long catch before being kicked out of the game, leading No. 15 West Virginia to a 35-30 win over Rutgers on Saturday.
Rasheed Marshall threw for two touchdowns and ran for another as the Moutaineers (7-1, 3-0 Big East) beat Rutgers (4-4, 1-3) for the 10th straight time, but the most memorable moments of the game were Henry’s pair of unsportsmanlike conduct penalties. Ryan Hart threw three touchdown passes for Rutgers, which made the game interesting by scoring twice after Henry was ejected.
Baylor 35, No. 16 Texas A&M 34
WACO, Texas – Shawn Bell threw a 12-yard touchdown pass to Dominique Ziegler and then they connected again for the game-winning 2-point conversion, lifting Baylor to a 35-34 overtime upset of No. 16 Texas A&M on Saturday night.
After Texas A&M’s Keith Joseph scored on a 16-yard touchdown run on the first possession of overtime, Bell and Ziegler led the Bears to the stunning finish.
Gold and green-clad students stormed the field, quickly taking down the goal posts in the south end zone and carrying them up and out of Floyd Casey Stadium.
No. 19 LSU 24, Vanderbilt 7
BATON ROUGE, La. – Alley Broussard ran for 80 yards and a touchdown, spearheading a strong game by No. 19 LSU in a 24-7 victory Saturday night over Vanderbilt.
The Tigers (6-2, 3-2 Southeastern Conference) have been inconsistent on offense and struggled to run – averaging just 155 yards a game.
Only one back, Justin Vincent, had a 100-yard game this season, and that was against Arkansas State. But against Vanderbilt, LSU rushed for 273 yards, with Joseph Addai adding 77 and quarterback Marcus Randall 68.
No. 23 Iowa 23, Illinois 13
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – Drew Tate threw a pair of 19-yard touchdown passes to Ed Hinkel and added a 5-yard run for a score to lead No. 23 Iowa past Illinois 23-13 Saturday, the Illini’s 14th straight Big Ten loss.
Tate’s run capped a 16-point third quarter that helped break open a 7-7 game for the Hawkeyes (6-2, 4-1). He finished 24-of-34 for 243 yards and had one pass intercepted.
Hinkel caught five passes for 108 yards and Sam Brownlee carried 19 times for 50 yards as Iowa gained 319 total yards against a defense ranked 107th nationally coming into the game. The Iowa defense held Illinois’ running attack to just 58 yards.

Indiana’s last win before Saturday was at then No. 24 Oregon.
