CANTON – On Wednesday night, selectmen signed contracts for the construction of the new fire station and for the concrete work. The station is being built on Route 108 just outside the village.

Blanchette Builders has the contract for all construction at a cost of $130,000. The money comes from a $250,000 Public Facilities Grant the town received a few months ago. The 80- by 68-foot building will house three truck bays, a training room, meeting room, kitchen and several offices. If the cement work can be done this fall, a spring completion date is anticipated.

Coleman Concrete received the signed contract for the concrete work. The foundation was to be poured Friday and the floor is expected to be done next week.

Road Commissioner Craig Gammon reported he in waiting for contractors to erect the guardrails to finish the River Road project. The restoration of a historical culvert on River Road has been completed.

Mike O’Donnell and Associates plans to begin its revaluation soon, and the town hopes to set up public meetings with taxpayers. These are yet to be scheduled.

A new resident on Whitney Brook Lane was at the meeting to complain about a $500 sewer connection fee. She claims that she was not informed of this cost. Every newly constructed home must pay the fee for connection to the town sewer. Administrative Assistant Kathy Hutchins said about 10 new structures have been built in the last year and a half.
