Following the publication of stories appearing on Oct. 21 and 22 regarding Union 29, I felt compelled to respond.
In the aftermath of the Columbine tragedy, schools across the country recognized the need to implement anti-bullying programs. Union 29 was no exception. Our elementary schools spend a great deal of time on character education, conflict resolution and anti-bullying programs such as the I-Care Kids program. Poland Regional High School has an Honor Code Pledge.
Children learn from adults and model their behavior. Conflict resolution cannot take place if key players refuse to acknowledge that a problem or issue exists. Resolution does not mean belittling, strong-arming, vindictive threats or intimidation of any kind.
Out shouting a citizen attempting to make a statement during an open public meeting (Oct. 20 PRHS meeting) is unacceptable. This is not the behavior I expect from a publicly elected official and sets a poor example for the youth of the community. Tyranny is never acceptable. The Honor Code Pledge is as follows: “I pledge to treat myself and others with respect, to bring no harm to my school or to the members of my community, and to be honest in all my endeavors. I will always try my best and will take responsibility for my actions and ownership of my choices.”
