The race for District 97 was not possible to call at midnight, with Democrat Marlee Turner leading in Hiram by 417 votes to Republican Roberta “Bobbie” Muse’s 394 votes.

Results from Brownfield and Fryeburg were not available at midnight.

Muse, a Fryeburg Academy teacher, fought a hard race after the August death of her husband, incumbent District 97 Rep. Kevin Muse.

Turner, of Brownfield, had the benefit of several extra months to prepare her campaign. But Muse was expected to have strong support in her hometown of Fryeburg.

Muse, a Clean Election candidate, ran with a promise to create a more business-friendly atmosphere in the state.

Through watching her husband during his two terms in office, Muse said she was “much better prepared than the average freshman House candidate to undertake this challenge.” She said she spent years discussing legislative issues with him, fielding constituent concerns, and helping him manage his campaign activities.

Her top priority, if elected, is to attract businesses to the state that will bring job opportunities for youth and displaced workers.

Turner, a bed and breakfast owner, is a member of Brownfield’s Budget Committee and numerous community organizations.

A Clean Election candidate, Turner said she would work to create more jobs and provide affordable health care for small businesses and individuals.
