In early results with two of five towns reporting, two-term incumbent Rep. Ray Pineau, D-Jay was winning House District 87 over Republican challenger Jesse Crandall of Mercer in early returns.
Jay voters cast 2,169 votes for Pineau and 637 votes for Crandall while Chesterville voters gave Pineau 338 votes and Crandall 336.
The Mercer, New Sharon and Starks ballot clerks had yet to report results as of 10:57 p.m.
Pineau said he is seeking re-election to a third legislative term to ensure “that the people who get up and go to work every morning have a voice in Augusta.”
Pineau said the affluent are able to hire people to speak for them and he intends to speak for the rest of Maine and believes his experience, ability to compromise and tenacity in staying with an issue qualifies him for the task.
Crandall said he is seeking election to make what he believe are “needed cuts in Augusta.”
