Incumbent Rep. Rodney Jennings, D-Leeds was narrowly winning with one town reporting late Tuesday over challenger Republican candidate, L. Gary Knight of Livermore Falls in House District 81 race.
Livermore voters cast 653 votes for Jennings and 628 votes for Knight.
Results for Leeds, Livermore Falls and Wayne were unreported by ballot clerks as of 11 p.m..
Jennings, who is seeking re-election to the House of Representatives, said he is running to effectively represent the people of his district.
“As a longtime mill worker and resident of this area,” he said, “I understand the challenges working people face every day, and want to represent them in Augusta.”
L. Gary Knight, a banker, says his top priority as a legislator would be to stop increased government spending.
“I can think of few instances when government is more efficient than private enterprise,” Knight stated. “We are not a business friendly state and I would like to see more and better jobs for our citizens. We need to lessen the tax and regulatory burdens so as to improve the economy to bring about better jobs and more of them. Perhaps in time, we can stop the out migration of our talented young people.”
