Incumbent Oxford County Commissioner Steve Merrill held a lead over Democratic challenger George Driscoll at 11:30 p.m. Tuesday, although several towns had not reported election results.
Results from Bethel, Hanover, Hiram, Norway, Stow and Albany had Merrill in the lead with 2,922 votes over Driscoll’s 2,237.
The run marked Driscoll’s first race for public office. The Bethel resident has his own sales and marketing business, and said he intended to use his professional skills while serving the community.
Driscoll said he wanted to create a better vision for the future of Oxford County, including plans to attract economic growth. To this end, county officials should be working together with municipal officials as well as area chambers of commerce and redevelopment organizations, he said.
Merrill, of Norway, said during his campaign that his 10 years of experience as a county commissioner is a valuable asset.
While he has served, Merrill said, the commission has kept taxes reasonable while providing services and maintaining county properties.
He noted the area has been growing, and said the county needs to plan for increased demands on services. Merrill advocated shared services between county and local government as a cost-saving measure.
