RUMFORD – A record turnout of nearly 3,400 voters overwhelmingly approved an amendment to the town’s charter that will require a referendum vote on all initiated articles of more than $150,000.
Voters said yes to the amendment by a vote of 1,884 to 1,288.
In the past, all initiated articles were voted on at the annual June town meeting. Such questions may now be discussed at town meeting but must be voted on at referendum.
The issue was raised by Selectman Jim Rinaldo, who was concerned because only a small percentage of the town’s voters turnout out for the town meeting. He believes more residents should have a say in such big ticket items.
Initiated articles can be placed on the town meeting warrant with selectmen approval or by a citizen petition drive.
The new amendment will go into effect at the June 2005 town meeting.
