Incumbent Rep. Ray Pineau, D-Jay, won a third term in the Legislature with an overall unofficial tally of 3,093 votes to 1,886 votes cast for Republican candidate Jesse Crandall of Mercer to serve District 87.
Pineau took his hometown of Jay and Chesterville, while Crandall claimed victory in New Sharon, Starks and Mercer.
“It was very tough race this year because of the Palesky referendum, bear referendum and polarized national election,” Pineau said.
There was a phenomenal turnout at the polls, Pineau said.
“The number of people that turned out, indicate to me that we’re being watched,” Pineau said.
Crandall said he was pleased with the number of votes he received. “I spent zero, and I still done pretty good,” he said.
He’s planning something in the future, he said. “Ray did a good job,” Crandall said. “I’m sure he’ll represent the people well in the next two years.”
