PARIS – Oxford County Special Olympics will hold its second annual bowling tournament and harvest dance Saturday, Nov. 6. at Oxford Hills Bowling Lanes on Route 26.

Starting at noon, according to volunteer Bruce Little, teams from Norway, Fryeburg, Mechanic Falls, Rumford, Oxford, South Paris and beyond will participate. Athletes of all ages, and coaches too, have been training and preparing for the past two months.

While all of the competitors will come away with ribbons, only the top rollers will sport the highest awards. In Special Olympics tradition, all awards will be bestowed upon the athletes by area law enforcement officers.

And for the second year in a row, the tournament will be followed by a harvest dance and banquet at the Norway American Legion on Main Street in Norway beginning at 3 p.m. Special Olympics volunteers will offer all participants a buffet-style banquet of sandwiches, chips and hot and cold drinks, and desserts.

Volunteer DJ Sam Little will spin favorite dance tunes.

Special Olympics is founded on the belief that people with mental retardation can, with proper instruction and encouragement, learn, enjoy and benefit from participation in individual and team sports, adapted as necessary to meet the needs of those with special mental and physical limitations. Every person, group or company is welcomed to participate in this event. More information may be obtained by calling Cara Maloney at 743-8914, extension 7004.
