LISBON – Marc L. Guilmette, 41, of Lewiston was arrested on drug and other charges early Thursday afternoon after fleeing from a traffic stop on Canal Street in Lisbon Falls.
Chief David Brooks said police were alerted by a cell phone caller that a car was being driven erratically on Canal Street. Officer Ryan McGee stopped the car on Canal Street and was putting handcuffs on Guilmette when he broke away and reached into his car for a black-handled knife with a 5- to 6-inch silver-colored blade and opened it.
The officer was not injured, the chief said.
Guilmette then jumped into his car and drove into Durham, turned left onto Route 125 and right onto a long dirt drive with McGee and Officer Jason St. Pierre in pursuit, Brooks said. Guilmette’s car got stuck, he said, and he jumped out and fled on foot. He was apprehended by the two officers at 1:09 p.m., 45 minutes after the initial stop, Brooks said.
Guilmette was taken to the Androscoggin County Jail in Auburn, where he was booked on charges of operating under the influence of drugs, assault on a police officer, possession of cocaine, refusing to submit to arrest, eluding a police officer and criminal mischief to private property.
Bail was set at $750 cash, Brooks said.
Guilmette was still being held at the jail early Thursday night, a jail spokesman said.
The 2000 green Mercury Marquis that Guilmette was driving is owned by Ronald Howe, whose address was listed as a post office box in Lisbon. The car was impounded after the owner refused to give police permission to search it. Police were getting a search warrant Thursday, Brooks said.
Brooks praised area law enforcement agencies for their “excellent assistance.” Within minutes of McGee’s call for help, four cruisers from the Brunswick Police Department responded, as well as Freeport police and the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Department. Maine State Police also offered a plane.
