A private in the Lewiston Fire Department braved the heat from a Lowell Street apartment building fire early Sunday morning to rescue a 9-year old boy trapped by the swirling flames. Pvt. Robert Young’s heroics were under scored by those of his firefighting comrades who alertly extinguished two other fires on Knox Street – both believed to have been set deliberately – before they could cause serious damage. The Lowell Street fire was reported at 1:42 a.m. and the Knox Street mishaps at 1:24 and 2:13 a.m. Sunday. Deputy Chief Clifton Smith of the LFD said Young entered the building at 42 Lowell St. and grabbed the child from his parent’s first floor bedroom. The boy was identified as Harold Small Jr. None of the occupants of the building’s six apartments were hurt.
