LEWISTON – Gordon Keith Abbott, 81, of Cary Hill Road, Hartford, died peacefully and unexpectedly with his family by his side on Wednesday evening, Nov. 3, following hip surgery on Sunday.
He was born in Norway on July 9, 1923, the son of Stevens and Vera (West) Abbott. He married Gloria Hagar on Dec. 25, 1946.
He was educated in Norway and Sumner schools and went on to complete electrical training in Boston. He was a member of the IBEW and worked throughout the country as an electrician. He served in the U.S. Marine Corp during World War II serving in Guam, Hawaii and Pelelu.
He was a member of the East Sumner Congregational Church and was a member of the Men’s Club and had served as deacon and trustee as well as aiding with maintenance and repairs.
He also enjoyed participating in the apple pie sale for the church at the Labor Day festivities. He was a 50-year member of both Subordinate and Pomona Grange having held many positions, including Master, Assistant Steward, Lecturer and Overseer.
He served as selectman for the town of Hartford for several years and served on the local school board. He was a member of the Turner Senior Citizens and enjoyed their fellowship and activities. He also enjoyed gardening, woodworking on his lathe, fine dining, his family, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 58 years, Gloria (Hagar) Abbott, of Hartford; one son, Aaron Abbott, of Turner; two daughters, Linda Lessor, of Buxton and Stephanie Davis, of Cape Elizabeth; three brothers, Allan Abbott, of Albuquerque, N.M., Jeriel Abbott, of Las Vegas, Nev., and Wayne Abbott, of Apex, N.C.; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents, two sisters, Helene Crockett and Sylvia Niles, and three brothers, Sidney, Glenn and Gary Abbott.
