TURNER – A Jay teenager was killed early Friday after his car crashed head-on into a pickup truck on Route 4.

Police said 19-year-old Michael P. Calden was trying to pass a car near the intersection of Route 219 when his vehicle slammed into the oncoming truck.

Calden was pronounced dead at Central Maine Medical Center. The driver of the pickup, 37-year-old Brian G. Belisle of Norway, was in fair condition at the hospital later in the day, according to a CMMC representative. Both drivers were alone at the time of the accident.

The 6 a.m. wreck forced the closure of a section of Route 4 as emergency vehicles responded and police began an investigation. Maine State Police Trooper Nathaniel Jamo was heading the investigation.

At Jay High School, officials made crisis counselors available to students. Friends said Calden graduated from the school in the spring.
