Even a new goaltender and the apparent re-awakening of Sidney Crosby couldn’t lift the Rimouski Oceanic to a win over the visiting Lewiston Maineiacs.

Brandon Roach blasted a shot by Jean-Michel Filiatrault 32 seconds into overtime to give the Maineiacs to a 5-4 win over the Oceanic in front of 4,565 fans at the Colisee de Rimouski Friday night.

The win is the Maineiacs’ first in four games and evens the season series between the two teams at 2-2.

“I am so happy with this game,” said Maineiacs coach Clem Jodoin. “I told the boys before the game that we would face a lot of adversity in this game, with the full crowd and the new goalie and everything, and they really played well tonight.”

Not only did the Maineiacs prevail on the road against one of the most potent offensive teams in the league, but they came from behind twice in the game to tie the score.

“They never panicked,” said Jodoin. “We were down and they stayed calm. I think the big thing, too, was that even when we were up in the third, we stayed focused.”

On Wednesday, Lewiston blew a 3-2 third-period lead at home against Quebec with sloppy play. Jodoin reminded the players of this with a 4-3 lead at the second intermission.

“We had to learn from last game,” said Jodoin. “I just told them to play smart, and to keep playing smart.”

Despite the Lewiston win, Crosby managed to have a four-point night, with two goals and two assists.

“Crosby is Crosby,” said Jodoin. “He is a great player, but it is a team game, and there are always four other players on the ice with him.”

It was Crosby that ended up as a goat on the Roach tally in overtime, too, as Mathieu Aubin won a clean draw inside the Oceanic zone and the puck found its way to Roach, who one-timed the puck past Filiatrault for the game-winner.

Crosby and Eric Neilson put the home team ahead 2-0 early before Pierre-Luc Champagne and Alex Bourret knotted the score at two in the latter half of the second period. Danny Stewart put the Oceanic ahead 3-2 briefly in the second before Alexandre Picard scored twice in two and a half minutes, the second on a shorthanded breakaway, to give the Maineiacs a 4-3 lead.

Crosby tied it early in the third and the teams skated scoreless until Roach’s overtime tally.

Lewiston enjoys a day off Saturday and will return to action on Sunday afternoon against the Quebec Remparts. The Remparts won 7-4 on Friday at home, but travel to Rimouski today before returning home to face Lewiston.

Lewiston is now 9-7-4-0 and tied at 22 points with Rimouski for third place in the Eastern Division. Lewiston has played just 20 games to Rimouski’s 22. Quebec is currently in second place with 28 points, one back of Chicoutimi.
