BATH – Her last shot will likely be her most memorable.
When Megan Rousseau stepped forward for her penalty kick Saturday afternoon, she was well aware of the situation. She was Brunswick’s only senior who was determined to break a 0-0 tie with Greely.
“I knew it was my last year, and I knew the ball was going to go into the back of the net,” said Rousseau. “I had to do it. I had to put it in the back of the net and win it for the team. I had the last shot and was happy to have it and happy to win the game for the team.”
Rousseau’s low shot to the left side gave Greely keeper Molly Hamel no chance. Rousseau’s goal broke a 4-4 tie in the first round of penalty kicks and lifted unbeaten Brunswick to a 1-0 victory, handing the Dragons the Class A girls’ state soccer title.
“Isn’t it ironic that the only senior on the team actually scored the winning penalty kick to win the state championship,” said Brunswick coach Martyn Davison. “It couldn’t have been planned any better.”
It was the first championship title for the Dragons (16-0-1) after five losses in the state game, including defeats by Greely in 2002 and 2000.
“I was thinking through the PK’s, we’re undefeated all season and to lose on PK’s,” said Davison. “So I’m just thankful and relieved that we won, but I feel for Kevin (Harvey) and his ladies because it’s a terrible way to lose a game.”
It was the fourth state game in the last five years for Greely (10-3-4), but the second straight 1-0 loss for the Rangers, who were beaten by Mt. Ararat last fall.
“This might have been one of the best high school games that I’ve seen,” said Harvey. “It was hard fought. Both teams had opportunities. You hate to see it decided like this, but you have to have a winner.”
Both clubs struggled to finish during regulation and four overtime periods, yet the teams combined to score on nine out of 10 penalty kicks. After Greely’s Sky Bryan and Brunswick’s Megan Clement each scored, Dragon keeper Lindsay Hammond smothered a shot by Mary Skahan.
Kate Ross followed with a shot to the right out of Hamel’s reach to put Brunswick ahead. Stephanie Morrison, Marisa Crommett and Rachelle Doucette all scored for Greely, but Caroline Hartzell and Meghan Morrell answered for the Dragons. After Doucette’s kicked low shot past the outstretched hand of Hammond, it was tied 4-4, but Rousseau still had her say.
“I always go down low to the left corner off my right foot – always,” said Rousseau. “For this to be my senior year with all these girls, it the best feeling in the world, having a perfect season and knowing nobody in the state of Maine could beat us.”
