MADAWASKA (AP) – A week after announcing a profitable third quarter, Fraser Papers Inc. announced layoffs that will mean the elimination of 78 jobs from the Madawaska-Edmundston complex.

The cuts, the second announced within 18 months, will take place by March 31, bringing the work force down to fewer than 1,200 employees, the company said. The complex employed 1,591 people in December 2002.

The Madawaska-Edmundston complex that straddles the border is the flagship of the Canadian-based papermaking company.

The Madawaska paper mill will cut 36 positions; its sister facility in Edmundston will cut 42 jobs. The company’s mill in Thurso, Quebec, is also cutting 60 jobs from its pulp mill operation.

Richard Marston, director of human relations at the Madawaska mill, said the company is restructuring and trimming unneeded positions.

“We are restructuring, eliminating nonvalue-added functions. This is part of a continual process to ensure that we are staying competitive,” Marston said. “We have to bring down the costs of the operations.”
