FARMINGTON – The fate of NOW Gallery and Studios in Farmington may once again be in flux if the sale of the Knowlton-McCleery building on Church Street goes through.

The Planning Board will review a revitalization project for the building behind Java Joe’s at the meeting Nov. 15.

Dennis and Ruth Haszko of Canada hope to renovate the building to house apartments, offices and ground-floor retail space, according the board’s posted agenda. If the board approves the plan, current owner Peggy Hodgkins of Wilton may be able to sell.

Attempts to reach Hodgkins were unsuccessful Friday.

The building was almost sold in February to Edward Martin, owner of Quad M’s Cabin Restaurant, who hoped to move his business downtown from its location on Fairbanks Road. Looking for more space, Martin hoped to be able to open the restaurant and a banquet room in the building. But parking and other issues prevented the sale.

In May of 2003, NOW opened the gallery with the use of an $8,000 renovation grant from the Maine Community Foundation and the Western Maine Mountains Alliance to create a space suitable for art showings.

If the building is sold, it is unclear what will happen to the gallery and artists’ studios. Artists using the space for shows and studios include University of Maine at Farmington students as well as community artists.

Steve Kaiser, code enforcement officer from Farmington, said Friday that the sale would be good for downtown.

“It seems like one of the better ideas to come down the pike,” he said.
