FARMINGTON – Evelyn Pearl Newell Edwards, 88, died Nov. 5, after a long illness at the Sandy River Nursing Home.

Born on Oct. 6, 1916, the daughter of George and Hattie (Wilber) Newell of North New Portland, she was educated in the New Portland schools and graduated from Central High School in 1934.

She married Marshall W. Edwards on Dec. 11, 1937, and he died Feb. 22, 2000. She worked for Fairview Hospital in Skowhegan as a practical nurse. She also did private duty nursing in homes in Farmington.

They resided on their farm on New Portland Hill until 1947, and then moved to Starks. In 1964, the family moved to Farmington.

Mrs. Edwards enjoyed memberships in New Century Rebekah Lodge, serving as noble grand.

She was appointed district deputy president of Rebekah Assembly of Maine and was a past conductor of distinguished decoration of Chivalry Award.

She was an associate member of Meriell Rebekah Lodge in Farmington and served several years as chaplain.

She was past regent of the Ruth Heald Cragin Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution of North Anson, member of Massalunskit Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star of New Sharon, member and former officer of Purity Court, Order of Amaranth in Farmington and over 50 years member of Starks Grange, Patrons of Husbandry and when it gave up its charter transferred to Crystal Lake Grange in Industry and a fifth degree of the grange, a member of Starks Church and attended the Fairbanks Union Church in Fairbanks. She was past president of the West Farmington Literary Club and a member of the Farmington Historical Society.

She is survived by son, Ivan A. Edwards, of Industry; foster daughter, Vicki W. Walker, of Farmington; sister-in-law, Cecile Newell, of Stratton; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by three brothers, Bernard, Walter and Donald Newell.
