WEST PARIS – Selectmen said this week that they are still searching for a certified code enforcement officer and a licensed plumbing inspector.

Town Manager Donald Woodbury said one person interested in the jobs has called Rainey.

“The one person who called me is certified in both,” Rainey said, “but we still need to look further into this and decide on what we are willing to offer for a salary. In talking with the Maine Municipal Association I have learned we have been paying a lot less than the state average of $15,000 per year for these positions. So we really need to look at our salary schedules and bring them up to date.”

Woodbury said John Gauthier, who held those positions, was paid about $3,500.

Gauthier resigned recently due to the heavy workload in other towns he serves. He is helping West Paris until a replacement is found.

Woodbury said Gauthier is doing the best he can, but he is receiving many complaints because permit applications are piling up.

“John is trying to get to us as quickly as possible, but the load he is carrying in the other towns he works for is causing people here to have to wait for approval for their projects,” Woodbury said. “It’s becoming a real embarrassment for the town. We need to find someone as soon as we can.”

The board agreed and will meet with two people interested in the jobs.

The town office will be closed Wednesday, Nov. 17, to allow the office staff to attend a motor vehicle training session in Augusta.
