LEWISTON – Joseph L. Michael, 93, formerly of Brookdale Village, Poland, died at St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center on Saturday, Nov. 13.
He was born in Lowell, Mass. on Oct. 31, 1911, the son of Nellie Daher Michael and Melad Michael. He was educated in Lowell schools before marrying Catherine R. O’Dea on Oct. 12, 1935.
In 1943, he came to the Lewiston-Auburn area to begin his career as a sports promoter, along with his brother, Sam. Together they held weekly boxing matches at Lewiston City Hall, and also brought big name bands to the Lewiston Armory.
He was a longtime member of St. Patrick’s Church, the New Auburn Social Club, and a lifetime member of the Lodge of Elk’s.
He is survived by his daughter Maureen and her husband, A. Harry Myrick, of Auburn, Dr. Michael Robert Michael and his wife Diann of Pine Bush, N.Y., Daniel Michael and his wife, Patrice, of Dennisport, Mass., and Thomas Coulombe and his wife, Patti, of Minot; nine grandchildren, Catherine Morin and her husband, Mike, of Auburn, Joseph Myrick and his wife, Maureen, of Lewiston, Susan Myrick, Rob, Holly, and Jenna Michael, of Dennisport, Mass., and Mary Coulombe of Minot; great-grandchildren, Jacob Roberts, Liz Morin, Katie and Matthew Myrick, and Nicholas Fess; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was predeceased by his wife, Catherine; infant son, Millard; and 13 siblings.
It was often said that “Joe endeared himself to all those who knew him.”
