RUMFORD – Vito M. DeFilipp, 81, Past National Vice Commander of the American Legion, died Saturday, Nov. 13, at Rumford Hospital with his family by his side. He was a resident of the River Road in Mexico.

Born in Rumford on May 8, 1923, he was a son of Germano and Anna Loita DeFilipp. He was a 1940 graduate of Stephens High School. He took ICS Course in Modern Management and attended FBI School. He was a PFC in the United States Army from 1943 to 1946. He worked for Boise Cascade Paper Mill in Rumford as a first class pipe leader for more than 45 years, and also was a police officer for the Town of Mexico.

He was very active with the American Legion, having served on all of the committees. He was also a communicant of St. Theresa’s Church in Mexico, where he was also very active and served on many committees. He was also a member of Mexico Budget Committee for 21 years; Boys State Committee and Boys State Coordinator; Robert Shand Post #1641 VFW; Rumford, Maine Lodge #862 BPOE; Past President of Gorizia Lodge #467, Sons of Italy; Past Grand Knight of Fr. Ambrose J. Barry Council #2091, K of C; Past Chef DeGore of 40/8 Club; Oakdale Country Club; 25 and 40 year club at Boise Cascade Paper Mill, and enjoyed bowling.

He was married in Rumford on June 15, 1944, to Frances Andrews who survives of Mexico. Other survivors include three sons, Richard DeFilipp of Falmouth, Peter DeFilipp of Mexico, and Timothy DeFilipp of Westbrook; one daughter, Joanne Alex and her husband, Joseph, of Old Town; six grandchildren; one brother, Pat DeFilipp and his wife, Aldona, of Mexico; and one sister, Rose Gallant and her husband, Tom, of Rumford.

He was predeceased by a son, Chris DeFilipp; four brothers, Salvatore, Dominic, Joseph and John DeFilipp; two sisters, Antoinette Umbro, and Mary Perry; and a niece and a nephew.
