Following the recent presidential election, the Sun Journal ran an editorial (Nov. 4), carrying the headline, “Country believes in Bush” completely disregarding that this area – and the state of Maine voted against Bush.

In addition, the editorial stated “Democrats were overwhelmed.” Considering the ratio was 51-48 nationally, it certainly was not an overwhelming decision.

Nationally, almost one half of the voting public voted against Bush, and merely one state, Ohio, swung the balance.

On Nov. 7, the Sun Journal’s executive editor, Rex Rhoades, wrote a stunning, lengthy column explaining his reaction, which was definitely most in keeping with the voters in Maine and this area. He should be commended for speaking out.

Mindful that “democracy holds the seeds of its own demise,” it’s crucial to protect our individual freedoms, faced with the dictatorial trend Bush is pursuing with disregard of separation of church and state, and disregard for opinions other than his own.
