NORTH CONWAY, N.H. – A forest fire that started Sunday in the White Mountain Forest had burned 119 acres on a ridge north of Lucy Brook in Bartlett by Monday evening, the U.S. Forest Service said.

Firefighters from the U.S. Forest Service and North Conway responded initially and worked to contain the fire as it moved up the ridge, according to a press release. A crew of 26 Forest Service firefighters worked Monday to further surround the fire with a fire line.

Incident Commander Ron Shorey reported Monday evening that the fire was about 85 percent contained. A 26-person crew will return Tuesday to complete the fire line, patrol the perimeter and extinguish hot spots.

The terrain is rugged, and the remote location requires about a one-mile walk from the nearest road. No structures or recreational sites are in the vicinity of the fire, although the Attitash hiking trail cuts through the area near Lucy Brook.

The cause of the fire is unknown.
