Game times for the three state championship matchups at Fitzpatrick Stadium on Saturday were confirmed Monday.
Representatives of the Maine Principals’ Association, the football committee and the competing teams met at the stadium Monday morning.
The Class B game between Mountain Valley (10-1) and Winslow (9-2) will play first at 11 a.m. The Class A matchup between Bangor (10-1) and Bonny Eagle (11-0) will begin at 2:30 p.m. The Class C tilt pairing Jay (11-0) and Bucksport (11-0) is slated for 6 p.m.
“We’d play at 12 noon on the spur of the moment if we had too,” said Mountain Valley coach Jim Aylward. “11 a.m. is a good time for us.”
The Falcons were hoping to get either the morning or afternoon time slot. The game times were based, in part, on travel times for the teams. The Falcons and Black Raiders are the closest of the six teams.
Jay coach Mark Bonnevie says it would have been a different experience trying to prepare for a morning game, but instead, his Tigers get the prime time position.
“That 6 p.m. time is fine with me,” said Bonnevie. “The fact that we’re there is the only thing that matters to me.”
Teams will have a chance to practice at the stadium this week if they choose. Typically, teams have been provided an opportunity to prepare on the turf if their opponents had experience playing on artificial turf. When Edward Little played Portland two years ago, the Red Eddies were allowed to practice there because it was Portland’s home field. Last fall, Brunswick was given the chance to practice since Deering had played there before.
“With the advent of Hampden Academy, Winslow had played on that kind of field and Mountain Valley had not,” said MPA Assistant Director Larry LaBrie. “It’s not a big deal, but it has been if you haven’t been there.”
As of Monday, the Falcons hadn’t decided whether they would practice there or not this week.
“We might and we might not,” said Aylward. “I need to talk to other coaches to see if the footing and all that warrants it. To take that much time out of a kid’s day, I don’t know if it will be any better for them.”
Bucksport will have the chance to practice on the Hampden Academy field. So Jay will get a session at Fitzpatrick Thursday night at 6 p.m.
“It worked out real good for us,” said Bonnevie. “Because our game is at night, we’ll get a chance to go down there and practice at night and get a feel for what it’s going to be like.”
