AUBURN – Board members and volunteers of the Greater Androscoggin Humane Society will be at the Shaw’s Supermarkets in Lewiston and Auburn on Saturday, Nov. 20, collecting donations of pet food and supplies. Cash donations will also be accepted.

The shelter relies heavily on the donations by the community of food and supplies for the animals. More than 60 pounds of dog food and 40 pounds of cat food are needed daily to feed the nearly 3,600 animals who pass through the shelter’s doors.

Members of the board of directors and volunteers will be at the two stores from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Drop boxes for pet food, supplies and cash donations will also be available at both stores until Dec. 24.

The Humane Society provides a safe haven for homeless and abused animals in the greater Androscoggin area. The primary support comes from fund-raising events and donations.

The shelter gives back through community services, including animal intake and adoption, animal health services, reuniting people with lost animals, humane education and working with individuals who are disadvantaged or developmentally disabled.

The shelter serves 11 municipalities, including Lewiston, Auburn, Turner and Greene, and a total population of more than 100,000 people.

It is located at 3312 Hotel Road. Anyone interested in learning more about volunteering at the shelter or adopting an animal can call 783-2311 or visit the Web site at www.gahumane.org.
