WALDOBORO (AP) – Osram Sylvania said Tuesday it plans to phase out production at its manufacturing plant in this midcoast town by next September, putting 130 people out of work.

The lighting company said global competition was forcing it to shift most of the plant’s production to the Czech Republic, where labor costs are cheaper. Some of the work will be moved to Osram Sylvania plants in New Hampshire and Kentucky.

The announcement came two years after the company said it was closing its Bangor plant, which had 97 workers, and moving its production to Mexico.

Citing the fate of the Bangor plant, employees at Waldoboro said the elimination of their jobs came as no surprise.

Osram Sylvania said it will provide workers with severance pay and continue health insurance coverage for a period of time.
