LEWISTON – The exhibit “Anne Frank in the World” has just opened at the Franco-American Heritage Center, 46 Cedar St. It will be here through Nov. 30.

The exhibit is co-sponsored by the Lewiston Middle School, The Jewish Community Alliance and the Franco-American Heritage Center.

“Anne Frank in the World” was on display at Portland’s City Hall from Oct. 12 through Nov. 15. During that stay, more than 3,200 Maine schoolchildren were able to see the exhibit. The text of the exhibit is presented in English and in French so this exhibit is of particular interest to the Franco-American community of this area.

“Anne Frank in the World” is an international exhibit that has more than 700 photographs, documents and excerpts from Anne Frank’s diary and workbooks from the the Anne Frank Center, USA, based in Manhattan. The exhibit was developed by the Anne Frank House in Amsterdam; it’s sponsored in North America by The Anne Frank Center, USA as a traveling exhibit which visits communities across the country to educate the public about her story and the horrors of the Holocaust. To date, the exhibit has been seen by more than 2 million visitors in more than 100 cities. This is the first time the exhibit has been in Maine.

The exhibit traces the historical developments during the pre-Nazi era through the end of World War II.

It discusses events and conditions that led up to World War II, the growth of the Nazi Party, the dismantling of democracy, the escalating persecution of “enemies” and the relation of these events to current issues.

This exhibit deals with the universal themes of exclusion, bullying and persecution as well as issues facing the world today, including the importance of human rights, individual responsibility and moral courage.

The Jewish Community Alliance is a nonprofit organization serving the Jewish population throughout Southern Maine.

Public exhibition at the center will be 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. For groups interested in the exhibit, people can call 783-1585 to schedule a specific time.
