PARIS – A former New England wrestling champion with five convictions for drunken driving and one for threatening to kill a deputy was arrested Thursday for the third time in three weeks.
Timothy L. Gotto, 44, of Rumford, was taken into custody by Rumford police on a charge of violating bail conditions, police said. He is being held at the Oxford County Jail without bail.
The 6-foot, 230-pound self-employed carpenter was convicted Oct. 26 of operating under the influence and terrorizing Oxford County Deputy Brian Landis after he threatened to kill him during Gotto’s arrest last April in Roxbury.
On Nov. 2, Oxford County Superior Court Justice Roland A. Cole sentenced Gotto to serve six months in jail and two years probation, pay a $2,000 fine and lose his driver’s license for six years. He was to complete an evaluation, get treatment for substance abuse, not possess or use alcohol or drugs, and refrain from all criminal conduct while on probation.
His jail sentence was postponed until Jan. 4, 2005.
But between his conviction and sentencing – on Oct. 29 – Gotto was arrested on charges of breaking into his former girlfriend’s home, throwing her against a wall and onto the floor, stomping on her and punching her face repeatedly, police said.
For that, he was arraigned Nov. 1 in Rumford District Court on charges of burglary and assault and released on $1,000 cash bail.
Assistant District Attorney Joseph M. O’Connor filed a motion Monday to revoke Gotto’s post-conviction bail because of the Oct. 29 charges. It was granted Thursday.
His stay-out-of-jail-until-2005 card was also revoked, Oxford County Superior Court Clerk Donna Howe said, and an arrest warrant was issued Thursday.
On Sunday, Gotto was arrested in Rumford on a charge of violating bail conditions for consuming alcohol, which resulted in revocation of his Nov. 1 bail.
Gotto was arraigned on that charge Monday in Rumford District Court and taken to Oxford County Jail and released on bail.
Gotto’s criminal history includes:
• Four OUI convictions: two on May 19, 1997 in Bangor District Court; one June 10, 2002, and one Aug. 19, 2003, in Rumford District Court.
• Two assault convictions: Jan. 26, 1999 in Rumford District Court; and April 6, 2001, in Oxford County Superior Court.
• One license suspension: Oct. 3, 2002, indefinitely, for failure to pay child support.
Gotto grew up in Mexico and transferred to Rumford High School in 1978 when he won state championships in wrestling, according to newspaper accounts. He posted a 38-0 record and won the New England Wrestling Championship that year.
