AUBURN – Three Pilates workshops will be featured as the second installment in the YMCA’s Wellness 101 series. The series is designed to introduce the principles of several wellness issues that face society.

The YMCA’s goal is to help individuals in the community make informed and educated decisions on healthy lifestyles. The October seminar was on nutrition basics, which focused on proper nutrition and healthy eating habits.

The Pilates workshops will be run by Tish Caldwell, YMCA wellness coordinator, who is a certified Pilates instructor. They are free and open to YMCA members and nonmembers.

The workshop dates and times are as follows: 10 to 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 22; 5:15 to 6:15 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 23; and noon to 1 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 24. No registration is necessary. Babysitting will be available.

“Pilates is an unbeatable combination that increases strength and flexibility,” Caldwell said. “It is a whole body exercise program that simultaneously strengthens and lengthens your muscles, improves posture and increases your energy.”

She said, “Pilates is an efficient way of stabilizing and strengthening your core, arms and legs, while increasing your flexibility. Participants see and feel the benefits of Pilates very quickly. Each exercise can be customized allowing anyone to participate regardless of your fitness level or where you are in the program’s progression.”

Caldwell, who has been at the YMCA since 1986, is a registered nurse, cardiac rehab nurse specialist, exercise specialist and is certified in polarity therapy bodywork and integrated yoga.

She coordinates the wellness programs at the YMCA. She continues to train with yoga teachers of varying traditional disciplines. She will also continue to pursue higher levels of training in Pilates as she incorporates it into the wellness program.
